DEFERMENT QUALIFICATIONS

Deferments allow the borrower to temporarily postpone payments in specific situations. During the deferment of an Unsubsidized loan, you will be responsible for all interest which accrues. Interest which is unpaid at the end of the deferment period will be capitalized (added to the principal balance of your loan). The Federal Government pays the interest on Subsidized loans during the deferment  period.

In order to qualify for a deferment, you must meet the specific eligibility requirements  for that deferment  type. Your  eligibility  for deferments  is determined by the date that you obtained your first Federal Student loan. The following deferments are available to borrowers whose loans are serviced by ACS. Click on a specific  deferment type to review the eligibility requirements.

Note for Co-Makers (spousal consolidation or PLUS loan made before April 16, 1999 to two parents): To be eligible for a deferment on a loan with co-makers, each co-maker must individually request and meet the requirements for the same or a different deferment. Each co-maker must complete a separate form.

To apply for a deferment, download and/or print the required form. Complete the form in detail and be sure to include any required authorization or documentation listed in the eligibility requirements section. Send the form to ACS for processing (ACS' address is on the form). We will process your application promptly. You will receive a notification from us explaining whether your deferment was applied, rejected, or pended for further information.

NOTE: Unemployment deferment requests and economic hardship deferment requests can now be completed and submitted online.  Go to the Deferment Assistant to apply.

All forms are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. You may obtain the free Adobe Acrobat reader which will allow you to print or view the forms here .

PARENT PLUS BORROWER DEFERMENT (loan specific deferment available for loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2008)

Eligibility for the Parent PLUS Borrower Deferment is based on the status of the student for whom the parent borrowed a PLUS loan.

      • The loan may be deferred while the student is in school at least half-time.
      • The loan may also be deferred for the 6-month period after the student ceases to be enrolled half-time or graduates.

It is especially important to understand how capitalization will impact principal and interest, since the deferment may be in effect for several years. To learn more, review Section 6: Definitions on the deferment form. You may want to consider paying interest each month during the deferment (If so, check the box in Section 3).

    • To qualify, you must:
      • Request the deferment. The deferment is not automatically granted for either the in-school period or 6-month period.

Click here to verify if the school the student is attending is a member of the National Student Loan Clearinghouse. If yes, submit the form without school certification. For your convenience, we will access the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) to verify the studentís enrollment. Although the studentís date of birth is not required, the date of birth helps us to confirm the accuracy of the information we request from NSLDS.

If the school is NOT a member, ask the school to complete Section 4 of the deferment form.

    • To request the deferment for the in-school and/or 6 month deferment period:

    • Contact Us by e-mail, telephone or mail to request the deferment and provide the following information:
      • Dependent studentís first and last name.
      • Social security number.
      • Date of birth.
      • School student is attending.

To request the 6-month deferment period, you may include the request at the same time as the initial request, or request the 6-month period when the student graduates or drops below half-time enrollment.

    • Or, complete a Parent PLUS Borrower Deferment Request and send the deferment to us. You do not need to have the deferment certified by an authorized school official before sending the form to us unless the school is not a member of the National Student Loan Clearinghouse. Click here to verify if the school the student is attending is a member of the National Student Loan Clearinghouse.

Return the completed form by mail or fax.

If you have any questions, please Contact Us.
