Note for Co-Makers (spousal consolidation or PLUS loan made before April 16, 1999 to two parents): To be eligible for a forbearance on a loan with co-makers, each co-maker must individually request and meet the requirements for the same or a different forbearance. Each co-maker must complete a separate form.

In School Full-Time or Half-Time

Attending an eligible institution at least half-time.

Click here to verify your school is a member of the National Student Loan Clearinghouse. If yes, submit the form without school certification. If your school is NOT a member, ask your school to complete Section 4 of the deferment form.

Economic Hardship

Working full-time (at least 30 hours per week); based on debt to income ratio of the larger of the Federal Minimum Wage Rate Rate or 150% of the poverty guidelines for my family size and state. This amount is listed in Section 6 of the for.

Receiving payments under a state or federal program such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF); Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Food Stamps,or state general public assistance; have been granted a deferment in the Direct Loan Program; Peace Corps volunteer

You have been recommended by an institution of higher education for a graduate fellowship program that is expected to last at least six months.

Parent PLUS loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2008

The loan may be deferred while the student is in school at least half-time.
The loan may also be deferred for the 6-month period after the student ceases to be enrolled half-time or graduates.

Military Service

You are on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard) during a war or other military operation or national emergency or performing qualifying National Guard duty during a war, other military operation or national emergency. You or your representative may complete the form.

Military Post-Active Duty Student  

You were on active duty and were enrolled in school at least-half-time at the time, or no more than six months prior to the time, you were called to active duty.
